Subaru Forester SF vs SG rear wheel arch panels: Fitment guide

SF and SG identify two different generations of the Subaru Forester. Because the body design changed between them, rear wheel arch repair panels should always be selected for the correct generation.

The cars may look related, but a repair panel has to match the actual shape of the quarter panel and wheel opening. Checking the chassis generation before ordering is therefore one of the most important fitment steps.

Know whether you have an SF or SG

The SF is the first-generation Forester, while SG identifies the generation that followed it. The two generations use different body designs, so their exterior repair panels should not be treated as interchangeable.

If a product is listed specifically for SF or SG, use that designation as a fitment requirement rather than a general description of the vehicle.

Check the production year with the generation

Production year helps confirm which generation you are dealing with. SF is generally associated with the earlier Forester generation, while SG covers the following production period.

Year ranges can vary slightly by market or model-year convention, so the chassis code and the fitment information on the product page provide a clearer check when the car is close to the change between generations.

Inspect the shape and extent of the damage

Rear wheel arch corrosion often begins around the lip of the arch, but the visible rust may not show the full extent of the problem. Inspect the surrounding quarter panel and the metal behind the outer arch before deciding which repair section is needed.

This helps determine whether an outer rear arch panel is sufficient or whether other areas also require repair.

Outer and inner sections should be checked separately

The visible rear wheel arch and the inner arch behind it are different parts of the body. Damage to one does not automatically mean the other needs replacement, but both should be inspected when corrosion is advanced.

Choosing the correct repair panel therefore starts with understanding where the damage is located, not simply ordering the first arch-shaped section that matches the model.

Check the side before ordering

Once the generation and repair area are confirmed, check whether you need the left or right panel. Side-specific parts should always be compared with the exact side of the vehicle being repaired.

Before checkout, match the Forester generation, production year, repair section and installation side with the information in the product listing.

Need help identifying the panel?

If you are unsure whether your Forester is an SF or SG, send us the production year and chassis information if available. A photo of the damaged wheel arch can also help us understand which section you are looking for.

Confirming these details first is much easier than trying to adapt a repair panel intended for a different generation.
