Left or right body panel? How to choose the correct installation side

Many Subaru repair panels are sold separately for the left and right side of the vehicle. Choosing the correct side sounds simple, but it is an easy detail to get wrong when looking at product photos or standing in front of the car.

Before ordering a side-specific wheel arch, rocker section or another body panel, make sure you are using the same left/right convention as the parts listing.

Left and right are based on the car

In automotive parts terminology, left and right normally refer to the vehicle from the driver’s seating position, facing forward. The left side of the car therefore remains the left side regardless of where you are standing when inspecting it.

If you stand in front of the vehicle and look toward the windscreen, the sides appear reversed from your own perspective. This is one of the most common reasons a customer can accidentally select the wrong side.

Do not identify the side from the photo alone

A loose repair panel can be difficult to recognise from a product image. Its orientation may not be obvious, and photos can be taken from different angles or with the panel turned around.

Use the left or right designation in the product title and description as the main reference. The image should help you recognise the type and shape of the part, not determine its installation side on its own.

Check the damaged area on the vehicle

Stand at the rear of the vehicle facing in the same direction as the car. This makes it easier to identify the left and right sides without mentally reversing them.

Then compare the damaged area with the product information. If you are ordering several repair sections for the same side, check every product individually rather than assuming that all items in the cart have the same orientation.

Side is only one part of fitment

Choosing the correct side does not guarantee that the panel will fit. The model, generation, chassis code, production year and body style must also match the product listing.

For example, a right-side rear wheel arch can still be the wrong part if it belongs to a different Impreza generation or a different body version. Treat installation side as one part of the complete fitment check.

If the side is unclear, confirm it before ordering

If you are unsure whether you need a left or right panel, send us a clear photo showing the damaged side of the vehicle together with the Subaru model and production year.

Confirming this before the order is much easier than discovering during the repair that the correct panel was selected for the opposite side.
